10. Gangs of Newyork (2002)
This is a historical fiction film, set in 1863 during the early days of civil war, about the Five Points Neighborhood in New York City. The story follows fictitious character, Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio),who comes back to five points to take revenge of his father death by killing Bill the Butcher (Daniel Day-Lewis). This film is DiCaprio’s first of the many films under the direction of Martin Scorsese, director who is known for pushing actors to do their best work. DiCaprio gave great performance in this film and keeps up with Danies Day-Lewis, which is saying a lot.
9. The Basketball diaries (1995):
The film directed by Scott Kalvert, is an adaptation of Jim Caroll’s life. Leonardo DiCaprio is starred, in this visual journal, as a Catholic school boy, who go from being high school basketball star to teenage junkie on the street of New York City. This was a very demanding role, showing the lows a person can reach through the drug addiction. DiCaprio doesn’t miss a beat to potray the role of Jimmy Carrol as a teenage drug addict.
8.Revolutionary Road (2008)
DiCaprio stars opposite Kate Winslet for the second time in Sam Mendes’ Revolotionary Road adapted from the classic 1961 novel by Rechard Yates. The film presents the story of Frank Wheeler who realizes that he hasn’t lived up to the potential he once believed he possessed. This role might be DiCaprio’s most sincere portrayal he’s yet delivered. DiCaprio and Kate Winslet turned this character-driven film to an emotional rollercoaster. But This film went largely unnoticed.
7. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
Long before Titanic, Leonardo DiCaprio played Artie, the younger mentally challanged brother to Johnny Depp. He portrays the mentally handicapped child with sharp an desparate intensity and in no way loses ground even in presence of a seasoned Depp. He also received an Academy Award nomination for his career defining performance.
Blood diamond, directed by Edward Zwick, is an intense and eye opening film about the diamond trade out of Sierra Leone (Africa). DiCaprio is starred as a South African, an ex-mercenary in a quest to recover a pink diamond which can transform life. Despite an unconvincing accent, he earned him his second Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Once Again, in this film, DiCaprio establishes him as an actor who can successfully
pull of “gritty” and “strong” characters with an effortless ease.
5. The Aviator (2004)
DiCaprio’s performance was highly praised in this movie, earning him yet another Oscar nomination and providing audiences with even more evidence that he is the real deal as an actor. In this movie, he portrays the role of Howard Hughes, a real life aviator, as he built the Hughes Aviation company and became the richest man in the world. It is a must see film for many reasons, but just watching Leo bring the oddity that was Howard Hughes to life is alone worth the price of admission.
4. Titanic (1997)
In thie epic masterpiece of James Cameron, Titanic, Leonardo DiCaprio plays Jack Dawson a characters that most moviegoers are familiar with. Not only is this film visually stunning but what made audiences come back again and again was the relationship portrayed by the two lead actors. The chemistry between Jack (DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) is undeniable and the picture is carried by that. Another Oscar nomination was earned by DiCaprio from this one of the best heartbreaking movies.
3. Catch Me If You Can (2002)
Under the direction of the great Steven Spielberg, Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Frank Abagnale Jr in this movie. Frank was a real life con artist who imitates his way through a number of careers including, airflight pilot, doctor, legal prosecutor and history professor and successfully conned millions of dollars worth of checks. 2. Inception (2010)
Inception is a story of dreams where Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a skilled “extractor,” able to enter people’s dreams to find information. It’s one of these rare films that you have to pay attention to nearly every single frame to keep up with what’s going on. The sheer brilliance of the plot obscured most of the performances. But Leonardy shines as Cobb amid all the spcial effects, especially in those heart thumping moments where he emotes the the grief of his lost wife.
1. The Departed (2006)
Winning four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, The Departed receives a lot of attention.
