Universal says Safe House 2 is in the works but…will it be a prequel or a sequel. Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington took us on a twist-heavy, international thrill ride in Safe House and The Hollywood Reporter confirms one or both of them will do it again. In Safe House, Reynold’s character Matt Weston is thrust into a life and death adventure to protect rogue CIA agent Tobin Frost and the classified, incriminating information he’s holding on to. Sources say the studio would love to see Denzel return for the follow up but since Tobin Frost didn’t make it through to the end…a prequel is looking like the best way to do that. Reynolds is likely to return but has no official deal yet. Safe house was one of Universal’s biggest domestic hits of 2012, raking in one hundred and twenty six million at home and two hundred and two million worldwide. Judging from the film’s box office success, hopes will be high for a sequel and Universal might just deliver with Scott Stuber back to produce. David Guggenheim will return to write Safe House 2 who shockingly wrote the first movie while working as an editor at Us Weekly. Guggenheim’s writing career has taken off since, with the Nicolage Cage and Malin Ackerman flick “Stolen” awaiting release. No word yet on whether Safe House’s director Daniel Espinosa will return for the sequel.
